coach Mike Sherman had dinner with the quarterback last Wednesday evening, but a deal does not seem imminent. Now comes word that the Browns might be interested, given the inertia in the market, in signing Couch to a one-year contract as Jeff Garcias backup.
Absent a trade, the Browns likely will release Couch, but continue to discuss the one-year option that team president Carmen Policy suddenly has on the table.
"He might be better off doing the kind of deal were talking about, maybe even make more money than he can on the open market, and then being guaranteed free agency next year," Policy said. "Its a distinct possibility."
In the meantime, Couch is believed to be using a Cleveland-area health club for offseason training. ...
In Chicago. ... The Bears acquired fullback Bryan Johnson from the Washington Redskins in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick Monday.
Johnson, a converted linebacker and a three-year starter, caught nine passes for 71 yards and had two carries for 5 yards. In 2002, he led Washington with 21 special-teams tackles.
Washington was slow in its attempt to sign Johnson to a new contract, so he signed a four-year, $4.3 million offer sheet with the New Orleans Saints two weeks ago.
The Redskins matched the offer on Friday, but the contract included a bonus that was to be paid Tuesday -- which would have wiped out much of Washingtons remaining cap space.
The trade with the Bears beat the bonus deadline and gives the Redskins a much-needed draft pick. Washington has just two other selections -- in the first and fifth rounds -- in Aprils draft. ...
Meanwhile in Washington. ... The Redskins search for an H-back continues.
According to Washington Times reporter Mark Zuckerman, a great deal of Joe Gibbs offense is centered around this unusual, part-fullback, part-tight end role, so it should come as no surprise the team has made
