Fortunately, Vick clearly understands the need to do a better job of protecting himself.
And with regard to the teams efforts to help him out, Ill point to the acquisition of former Chicago wideout Dez White as a step in the right direction. And while not as high profile a move, last Thursdays addition of veteran quarterback Ty Detmer, signed to a one-year deal, might be just as helpful.
If youll recall, Vick struggled as a passer upon his return, completing just half of his passes, and has occasional problems both from a mechanical standpoint and in getting his timing right.
And coaches believe that Detmer, who has played for Green Bay, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Cleveland before spending the past two seasons in Detroit, can help.
Asked if he was brought on board primarily to tutor Vick, Detmer told Winkeljohn and fellow Journal-Constitution staffer Ken Sugiura: "Thats one of the things that we talked about. Ive been doing that pretty much the last few years with different quarterbacks."
Having worked with Falcons offensive coordinator Greg Knapp in San Francisco in 1998, Detmer is familiar with Atlantas new offense.
"Obviously the offensive system played a big part in [the decision]," Detmer said.
And in a column published last Friday, ESPN.com insider Len Pasquarelli reminded readers: "Despite his wondrous athleticism, Vick is anything but a classic West Coast quarterback.
"He does not have a high completion percentage, struggles with the touch pass, and the ball does not come out all that quickly with him. He is, some people would argue convincingly, the antithesis of the rhythm passer.
"And so Knapp can use some help acclimating Vick to the new system and Detmer will be a nice aide in that regard."
