"We have been working very hard on evaluating offensive players and looking at the talent on that side of the ball," Sundquist said. "There is no doubt well (add offensive players), not only in the draft, but in free agency as well.
"Youve got the draft, and you never know whats going to happen with the post-June 1 cuts. To say that weve concentrated all our resources monetarily and effort-wise to the defense would be a little misleading."
Sundquist also noted that signing Hearst does not signify a lack of confidence in Quentin Griffin, who started the Broncos last two regular-season games in place of Clinton Portis last fall and ran for 138 yards in the Week 16 win at Indianapolis.
"Not at all," Sundquist said. "Quentins the only guy of the three running backs -- along with Cecil [Sapp] and Ahmaad [Galloway] -- whos played substantially in a game. Should Griffin go down, where do you go? You need to have depth there.
"Im sure Garrison is going to come in and fight his rear end off to be the starter. Whether he gets it or not, well have depth one way or the other, whether its Quentin in the backup role or Garrison in the backup role. Or who knows? We may rotate. So it means nothing. I think the way Quentin came on at the end of the year showed that he could play in the league. It just took him a little while to get over the broken leg that he suffered in training camp, and then build up a little confidence that a rookie running back normally gains during training camp."
The addition of Hearst doesnt make it more or less likely that the Broncos will add a running back via the draft, either.
"I dont think any more or less," Sundquist said. "Weve pretty much drafted a running back just about every year. Where thatll be, it all depends on the player at the time or the need. I dont
