How much time does all this take?

The answer to this question depends in large part on just how competitive your league is and how much you want to "master" the game. But, generally speaking, you'll at least want to skim the NFL news once or twice per week to see if any of your players are injured, about to lose their job, etc. You will also need to go in and select a starting lineup once each week some time prior to kickoff of the first NFL game.

In the simplest leagues you can spend as little as 5-10 minutes per week on your team, while in highly competitive leagues you can spend hours scanning the services like the FootballDieHards.com, making trade proposals and speculating as to how your players will perform in the coming week.

in Denver as draft picks. Furthering the connection is the fact that Davis served as Hearsts backup with the Bulldogs.

But what attracted the Broncos to the 33-year-old Hearst was more than just his college pedigree. It was the persistence and fortitude he demonstrated in rebounding from two career-threatening injuries, as well as his leadership in the locker room.

According to Rocky Mountain News staffer Lee Rasizer, the Broncos have kept tabs on Hearst since his Feb. 26 release from the San Francisco 49ers. With Hearst antsy and the number of quality free agents at his position dwindling, Denver decided it was time to make a move.

"Hes been a part of playoff teams before, so he knows what its going to take to get us where we want to go, and that is deep in the playoffs and for a shot at a Super Bowl championship," Sundquist said. "Hes going to bring leadership on the offensive side that some of our new acquisitions on the defensive side will -- having seen a lot of football, having been through tough times and having overcome tough times."

A two-time NFL Comeback Player of the Year, Hearst has averaged 4.8, 4.5 and 4.3 yards per carry in the three years since returning from a horrific ankle injury incurred during the San Francisco 49ers playoff loss at Atlanta on Jan. 9, 1999. He only missed four games over the three years since returning while rushing for 2,946 yards and catching 124 passes for 875 yards in that span.

"Hes explosive. Hes still got a lot of mileage left in his legs," Sundquist said. "He obviously brings some depth to a position that lost a little bit of depth here in the offseason, and were excited about his prospects both as a runner and a receiver."

Hearst is the third offensive player signed from another team during the free-agency period that began March 1; Denver signed San Francisco tight end Jed Weaver to a contract on Mar. 18. Former Houston quarterback Mike Quinn was added on Mar. 10.

The team also made a concerted effort to keep some of their own talent on
