Hearst has been able to bounce back from injury previously. He is the only player to twice win the NFLs comeback player of the year award. He won it in Arizona in 1995, when he returned from a knee injury and again in 2001, when he returned from severe ankle problems.
Hearst, 33, does not have the wear and tear some other backs his age do. During 11 NFL seasons, Hearst has carried the football 1,811 times for 7,885 yards. Hearsts college teammate Davis carried the football 1,655 times for 7,607 yards in seven seasons.
Asked Tuesday if his team is through signing big-name free agents, head coach Mike Shanahan said: "Free agency goes on all year round. You are always trying to fine-tune your football team. That is what we do. ..."

In Baltimore. ... The Ravens remain high on Cleveland receiver Dennis Northcutt, but a trade offer is not necessarily imminent, team sources said yesterday.
According to Baltimore Sun staffer Bent Jones, Northcutt was one of the players the Ravens were going to target heading into free agency. But Northcutts agent missed a deadline to file papers with the league that would have voided the remaining years of Northcutts contract.
With Northcutt is still the property of the Browns, Cleveland has given him permission to seek trade opportunities. Team sources told Jones the Ravens are looking at Northcutt, but are not willing to part with a high draft choice to obtain him. The Ravens also might be open to a player-for-player deal.
The Browns, though, are unlikely to trade Northcutt within the division and have not ruled out the possibility of having him return. Northcutt led the Browns with 62 receptions for 729 yards last season, his first as a full-time starter, with two touchdowns.
