How much time does all this take?

The answer to this question depends in large part on just how competitive your league is and how much you want to "master" the game. But, generally speaking, you'll at least want to skim the NFL news once or twice per week to see if any of your players are injured, about to lose their job, etc. You will also need to go in and select a starting lineup once each week some time prior to kickoff of the first NFL game.

In the simplest leagues you can spend as little as 5-10 minutes per week on your team, while in highly competitive leagues you can spend hours scanning the services like the FootballDieHards.com, making trade proposals and speculating as to how your players will perform in the coming week.

of the backfield, his knowledge of the one-back system and his ability to play special teams.

Brysons two-year deal is worth $1.875 million and includes a $650,000 signing bonus -- a solid indication that the former Bill will make the teams 53-man roster this season. ...

In a semi-related note. ... Hearst still might be a member of the 49ers if not for the tension between Hearst and Kevan Barlow.

In an article published Sunday, Sporting News columnist Dan Pompei advised readers that Hearst and fullback Fred Beasley, "who are solid professionals, resented what they perceived as a lack of professionalism in the younger Barlow and did not get along with him."

When the 49ers made a contractual commitment to Barlow, it meant Hearst would have to take a pay cut and a reduced role. According to Pompei, playing second fiddle to Barlow was not something Hearst could stomach, and the 49ers felt it was better for team chemistry to let Hearst go. ...

Also in San Francisco. ... Place-kicker Todd Peterson re-signed with the 49ers on Tuesday, agreeing to a one-year contract.

Peterson joined the 49ers midway through last season as their fourth kicker in 15 games. The 10-year veteran stabilized San Franciscos most troublesome position, making 12 of his 15 field goals and 22 of 23 extra points.

Peterson previously played four seasons for the Seattle Seahawks under current Niners head coach Dennis Erickson. Peterson also kicked for Pittsburgh and Kansas City. ...

In Houston. ... Mark Bruener, the starting tight end for the Pittsburgh Steelers for eight years before losing his job last season, signed as a free agent with the Houston Texans on Monday.

Terms were not disclosed.

Bruener was a first-round pick of the Steelers in 1995 and was a starter before injuries forced him to lose his job to Jay Riemersma last season. He had just two catches for 12 yards in 2003.

The 31-year-old Bruener has a reputation
