How much time does all this take?

The answer to this question depends in large part on just how competitive your league is and how much you want to "master" the game. But, generally speaking, you'll at least want to skim the NFL news once or twice per week to see if any of your players are injured, about to lose their job, etc. You will also need to go in and select a starting lineup once each week some time prior to kickoff of the first NFL game.

In the simplest leagues you can spend as little as 5-10 minutes per week on your team, while in highly competitive leagues you can spend hours scanning the services like the FootballDieHards.com, making trade proposals and speculating as to how your players will perform in the coming week.

noted this morning, Mart worked closely with Chandler back in 1994, the Rams last season in California. Martz was the teams quarterback coach.

Chandler played in 12 games that year with six starts. He completed 61.4 percent of his attempts that season (108 for 176) with a passer rating of 93.8. Other than his 1997 and 98 Pro Bowl seasons in Atlanta, when Chandler was at the height of his skills, it was the highest passer rating of his 16-year NFL career.

"His experience is invaluable," Martz said. "Hes been in the Super Bowl. He knows how to win. Hes a real good fit for what were looking for right now."

Whether its as the Rams No. 2 or No. 3 quarterback, Chandler still has something to offer, Martz believes.

"Hes very intelligent," Martz said. "Hes the one guy who can come in here as a veteran and know exactly what were doing within a very short period of time. Hes very accurate, and hes got good presence in the huddle. ..."

In Detroit. ... As Booth Newspapers staffer Tom Kowalski put it: "The once-sparse backfield for the Detroit Lions could get crowded soon."

With Artose Pinner already on the roster, the Lions re-signed reserve running back Shawn Bryson to a two-year contract Monday. But that does not mean the Lions wont continue to pursue another veteran free agent.

The Lions recently had Garrison Hearst and Amos Zereoue in town for visits and the team is continuing negotiations with both players. According to Kowalski, its also possible the Lions, even if they sign Hearst or Zereoue, could take a running back in the April 24-25 NFL draft.

Bryson signed a one-year deal with the Lions last year and was expected to play a reserve role and be part of the third-down package. A preseason injury to James Stewart, though, pressed Bryson into starting duty and he became the teams leading rusher (606 yards) and receiver (54 catches for 340 yards).

Bryson has value to the Lions because of his versatility catching the ball out
