In New York. ... Giants quarterback Kerry Collins reiterated on Monday that he would not accept a short-term extension of his contract, which expires after 2004.
Revising the deal, under which Collins is to earn $7 million this year, would free needed salary-cap space, but a resolution likely will wait until after next months draft, in which the Giants could select a quarterback within the first three rounds.
According to New York Newsday staffer Neil Best, Collins, 31, speculated that if no agreement is reached before the draft, the Giants might be more inclined to use a high pick at the position. Mississippis Eli Manning is projected as the No. 1 overall choice.
"Id like a long-term extension, longer than two years," Collins told Best. "Thats the kind of commitment I want to see from them. They will get that kind of commitment back."
No matter what happens in the draft or contract talks, Collins said he will not alter his approach. "Im going to be committed to workouts, to learning the offense," he said, "regardless of whether they take [a quarterback] with the first pick [fourth overall] or somewhere else."
Also according to Best, coaches have told Tiki Barber they will focus on reducing fumbles. "I already know hes going to drill me about it," Barber said of new head coach Tom Coughlin. The plan includes ball-stripping drills.
Coughlin hopes to have Ron Dayne lighten the load on Barber. "When we went to the Super Bowl, Ron had more carries than me," Barber said. "I know its a formula that works. ..."
Coughlin meanwhile, provided reinforcement at the start of Mondays team meeting -- his first with the entire squad: He used a PowerPoint presentation while making his 45-minute address.
