Johnson was deactivated last year, 6-3, 227-pound Charles Lee took his place and recorded 33 receptions for 432 yards and two touchdowns, effectively replacing Johnsons production. Other Buc receivers with good size and hands include Joe Jurevicius (6-5, 230) and Keenan McCardell (6-1, 191). Newcomers Sylvester Morris (6-3, 212) and Danny Farmer (6-3, 215) also fit that mold.
While none of those players can claim career accomplishments equal to Johnsons, they should help the team handle his departure.
Galloway, on the other hand, gives the Bucs a shot of speed they had desperately craved, particularly at the receiver position. Head coach Jon Gruden has improved the Bucs offense from a 26th in 2001 to 10th last year with a much more diverse approach than the team had featured in the past. With Galloway in the mix, Grudens options only increase.
"Joey Galloway is one of the fastest players in the NFL and I know what Jon Gruden can do with speed," said Allen. "[Gruden] really gets excited (about that). Ever since Ive known Jon, hes wanted speed."
Meanwhile, Johnson was so confident he was coming to Dallas that he already began house hunting.
After all, had the trade fallen through, Tampa Bay wouldve released him by April 1 to avoid paying a $1 million roster bonus, and he wouldve signed with the Cowboys as a free agent. His new contract is for $20 million over four years with a $4 million bonus.
Both players are former 1,000-yard receivers coming off down years. Both originally were acquired for two first-round draft picks and neither lived up to expectations, although the Bucs did win a Super Bowl with Johnson.
Tampa Bay made Johnson inactive the final six games last season, citing his ongoing squabbles with Gruden as a detriment to the team. But the Cowboys dont appear concerned bringing in Johnson, who played three seasons under Parcells with the Jets from 1997-99, knowing he is the possession receiver they dont have.
