to Akron Beacon Journal staff writer Patrick McManamon, the Browns do not believe the settlement in Terrell Owens case affects Dennis Northcutts status.
They have support in a key place. Carl Francis, director of communication of the NFL Players Association, who told McManamon that Owens and Northcutts situations are different.
"One doesnt have anything to do with the other," Francis said.
Northcutts date to void the last three years of his deal was firm and clearly stated in his contract. Owens had a chance to win his grievance, but the team feels Northcutt simply missed the deadline and he remains a Browns wide receiver through 2006.
And Cleveland Plain Dealer reporter Tony Grossi noted this morning that prior to the snafu, the Browns offered Northcutt a new contract similar to what they gave Kevin Johnson the year before four years for $13.35 million, with a $3.5 million signing bonus. Northcutt was hoping free agency would net him a better offer.
Instead, Northcutt is tied to the Browns for the next three years at an average salary of $696,000. The team is willing to give Northcutt a better contract than his present one, but it will not revisit the $13.35 million offer.
The Browns have not given Northcutt permission to seek a trade. Ultimately, it may come to that.
Asked if he wanted Northcutt to return, head coach Butch Davis said last week: "You have to like what he brings to the table. A lot of it, certainly, would depend on his feelings."
For what its worth, Davis and Northcutt havent spoken since the end of the season. ...
In Miami. ... Wide receiver-kick returner Terrence Wilkins, an unrestricted free agent who spent the final seven games of last season with the Indianapolis Colts, signed a one-year contract with the Dolphins on Tuesday.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
In his five-year career, Wilkins has caught 124 passes for 1,497 yards
