staff writer Bill Soliday suggested: "First, [Gannon] is 38 and will turn 39 before the 2004 season begins. Second, there is talent waiting in the wings in the form of Marques Tuiasosopo. Third, the Raiders plan to go forth with a deeper passing attack than in the past, and Gannons strong suit was never his arm."
Its also worth noting that after Oakland ended last season 4-12 only a year after winning the AFC title -- the worst collapse by a team in the Super Bowl the previous year -- Gannon criticized the Raiders. He said he believes he unfairly became the organizations scapegoat in the first seven weeks of the season when no one stepped forward to take responsibility for the failures.
He later met with owner Al Davis.
Whatever the case, new offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye has no interest in being part of another hasty decision involving Gannon. The first time didnt work out too well. Raye coached in Kansas City when Gannon was a Chief.
"I coached him in Kansas City. ... We chose the other guy over him," Raye said, referring to Elvis Grbac. "Geez, what a mistake that was. We chose Grbac because we thought [Gannon] was too old and that the upside of Grbac in the system was going to be the difference.
"It proved wrong."
That said, Raye made it clear Gannon will not merely be told to show up and keep doing what he was doing before he was hurt last year.
"He will start from a basic fundamental standpoint, just like the first day of spring practice in college," Raye said. "Hell start with the 3-step drop. ... And we will work progressions. ... Just like you would with a freshman kid in college.
"The image of himself is what he had become. So I think we have to get back and get started in a fundamental sense and go from there."
And according to Soliday: "Like every other player on the Raiders roster, he faces a new beginning with new supervisors."
