How much time does all this take?

The answer to this question depends in large part on just how competitive your league is and how much you want to "master" the game. But, generally speaking, you'll at least want to skim the NFL news once or twice per week to see if any of your players are injured, about to lose their job, etc. You will also need to go in and select a starting lineup once each week some time prior to kickoff of the first NFL game.

In the simplest leagues you can spend as little as 5-10 minutes per week on your team, while in highly competitive leagues you can spend hours scanning the services like the FootballDieHards.com, making trade proposals and speculating as to how your players will perform in the coming week.

Gannon will report to team headquarters in the next few weeks so the Raiders can monitor his throwing routine.

"Were going to be smart and take it slow in terms of what we ask him to do, but Rich threw here about a month ago," new head coach Norv Turner said Tuesday. "I watched him throw. He was throwing it about 20 yards and throwing it fairly firm."

Gannon told Turner last week he threw about 45 balls a distance of nearly 40 yards.

"He said its the best hes felt since the surgery and he was very positive about where his arm is," Turner said.

The 38-year-old Gannon, knocked out of a loss to Kansas City last Oct. 20, had surgery in November to repair a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder.

Gannons role for 2004 is unclear -- and it certainly will depend on his health.

According to McCauley, the Raiders may choose to draft Mississippi quarterback Eli Manning with the second overall selection in next months draft and still keep Gannon, who has been a valuable veteran presence for a franchise that cherishes its old guys.

Then again. ... Team officials might opt not to take on the $7 million salary Gannon is set to make in 2004.

It should be noted that factors other than salary will come into play, too.
