How much time does all this take?

The answer to this question depends in large part on just how competitive your league is and how much you want to "master" the game. But, generally speaking, you'll at least want to skim the NFL news once or twice per week to see if any of your players are injured, about to lose their job, etc. You will also need to go in and select a starting lineup once each week some time prior to kickoff of the first NFL game.

In the simplest leagues you can spend as little as 5-10 minutes per week on your team, while in highly competitive leagues you can spend hours scanning the services like the FootballDieHards.com, making trade proposals and speculating as to how your players will perform in the coming week.

"We never had him in the locker room, so we never conversed with him and we dont know what we had," punter Dave Zastudil told AP sports writer David Ginsburg. "I know what we had from last year, though, and I think well be fine."

The Ravens thought they had significantly improved a glaring weakness from 2003 by obtaining Owens , but the uncertainty surrounding the trade made it easier for the Ravens to adjust to the news that second-year quarterback Kyle Boller would not be throwing passes to Owens after all.

"Obviously, hes a great receiver. He would help any team," Zastudil said.

Especially the Ravens, whose leading receiver in 2003 was tight end Todd Heap with 57 receptions. Wide receiver Travis Taylor ranked second with 39 catches, ahead of Marcus Robinson, who signed as a free agent with the Minnesota Vikings four days after Baltimore made the trade for Owens.

Given their current situation, its safe to assume the Ravens will continue to look for answers on the outside.

"As I said a few weeks ago at the start of free agency, my head is not in the sand regarding our receiver position," general manager Ozzie Newsome said. "We want to get better there, and well keep trying to do so between now and the start of the season. ..."

Owens said he had nothing against Baltimore.

"The thing was, I wasnt given my shot at free agency," he said. "Its been frustrating. The most important thing for me was to have my agents back. I think hes really taken a big hit, and hes probably been the one most tarnished in this whole situation. I had to call him a couple times just to keep his spirits up.

"But I was pretty confident in
