The 49ers had dealt Owens to the Ravens on March 4 for a 2004 second-round pick after they had given permission to the Eagles to negotiate a contract with the four-time Pro Bowler. That did not sit well with Owens, who wanted to play with McNabb in Philadelphia.

The NFL Players Association filed for a hearing on Owens behalf, claiming he should have been declared an unrestricted free agent, therefore voiding any trade.
Owens supposedly lost his status as an unrestricted free agent when his agent, David Joseph, failed to void the final three years of his contract worth $17.7 million by not getting the required paperwork in on time.
A hearing to determine Owens status was held Monday at the University of Pennsylvania Law School. Lawyers for the league and the union spent more than two hours arguing before special master Stephen Burbank, who was expected to announce a decision Tuesday.
Owens contract stated that the player needed to void the contract by March 2, but the NFL and the 49ers argued that the player needed to do so before the Feb. 21 date listed in the collective-bargaining agreement, a document that they argued supersedes Owens contract.
So, the question that comes immediately to mind is what happened to the notion Owens didnt have a leg to stand on?
After all, the majority opinion among those who followed the case closely prior to announcement of the settlement clearly backed the leagues position.
