They signed the former University of Florida kicker, who grew up in nearby Mandarin, to a one-year contract Monday after failing to sign a veteran kicker in free agency.
"Its just a great opportunity," said Chandler, whod been hoping to hear from the Jaguars since working out for them about a month ago. He was signed in time to be on hand for the beginning of the teams offseason program next Monday.
The Jaguars had signed Shayne Graham of Cincinnati to a five-year, $6.5 million offer year only to have the Bengals match it and made an offer to Matt Stover of Baltimore only to have Stover decide to stay with the Ravens.
Chandler said hell be ready for the challenge of dueling with Seth Marler for the starting job after being waived by San Francisco last year, despite making 6-of-7 field goals.
Marler, an undrafted rookie last year, made only 20-of-33 attempts when the Jaguars had the worst team kicking percentage in the league.
"I kind of know what to expect now," Chandler said. "Nothing is guaranteed."
After being waived by the 49ers, he had workouts with the Giants, Cardinals and Patriots last year and got an offer to come to camp with the Patriots this fall.
But with Adam Vinatieri entrenched as the Patriots kicker, he decided to pass.
"I wanted to go to a situation where I had a chance to compete for a job. Its tough to kick when you know you have no chance of winning a job," he said. ...
