How much time does all this take?

The answer to this question depends in large part on just how competitive your league is and how much you want to "master" the game. But, generally speaking, you'll at least want to skim the NFL news once or twice per week to see if any of your players are injured, about to lose their job, etc. You will also need to go in and select a starting lineup once each week some time prior to kickoff of the first NFL game.

In the simplest leagues you can spend as little as 5-10 minutes per week on your team, while in highly competitive leagues you can spend hours scanning the services like the FootballDieHards.com, making trade proposals and speculating as to how your players will perform in the coming week.

Also, while Stewart struggled last season, he does have two 3,000-yard passing seasons with Pittsburgh to his credit along with 38 career rushing touchdowns.

For Stewart, its a chance to return to his football roots. He finished his four-year college career in Boulder (1991-94) as Colorados all-time leader in nine different major offensive categories. And he appears comfortable with the notion of serving as a backup, with no starting jobs currently available.

"Clearly, Colorado is a place thats attractive to him from the standpoint of having success there before, playing well in the weather, having fans there and a storehouse of great memories," Steinberg told Rasizer. "Hes been looking forward to this trip."

The Broncos already have entertained Tennessees Billy Volek, another candidate for the No. 2 quarterback job. ...

In Minnesota. ... The Vikings released receiver DWayne Bates on Monday.

According to St. Paul Pioneer Press beat man Bill Williamson, the Vikings were unable find any partners interest in trading for Bates, who had two disappointing seasons with the Vikings after joining them under strange circumstances. The Vikings signed Bates to a restricted free-agent offer sheet from Chicago in spring 2002.

The Bears matched the offer, only to waive Bates the next day. The Vikings then claimed him.

Bates two seasons with the Vikings were hampered by injuries. He lost his position as the No. 2 receiver last season when he had just 15 receptions for 151 yards and one touchdown in eight starts. With Marcus Robinson signed to be the No. 2 receiver, Bates, 28, fell to fifth on the depth chart behind Nate
