How much time does all this take?

The answer to this question depends in large part on just how competitive your league is and how much you want to "master" the game. But, generally speaking, you'll at least want to skim the NFL news once or twice per week to see if any of your players are injured, about to lose their job, etc. You will also need to go in and select a starting lineup once each week some time prior to kickoff of the first NFL game.

In the simplest leagues you can spend as little as 5-10 minutes per week on your team, while in highly competitive leagues you can spend hours scanning the services like the FootballDieHards.com, making trade proposals and speculating as to how your players will perform in the coming week.

According to Tampa Tribune staffer Ira Kaufman, Simms inexperience is behind Grudens desire to find a veteran quarterback who can grasp his intricate system quickly. Quarterback depth remains a high priority, accelerated by Shaun Kings departure to Arizona.

"Weve played three games since Ive been here without Brad Johnson -- and we havent scored a touchdown in any of em," Gruden said, forgetting about Rob Johnsons late scoring pass against Pittsburgh in a 2002 loss.

Griese won three of his five starts for the Dolphins in 2003 but finished with six interceptions and 12 sacks in 130 pass attempts. In 2000, he earned a Pro Bowl berth despite starting only 10 games for the Broncos, compiling a touchdown-interception ratio of 19-4.

"Brian came in today just to get to know everyone," Allen said. "Hell take a few more trips and well be bringing in some other quarterbacks as well."

One such quarterback the Bucs may eventually bring in is former Steelers and Bears starter Kordell Stewart. Though neither a visit nor a signing are imminent, Stewarts agent, Leigh Steinberg, told Kaufman on Monday that he and the Bucs have had some discussions about Stewart. ...

Meanwhile, Stewart was slated to visit the Denver Broncos Tuesday. The former University of Colorado standouts lone season with the Bears was filled with frustration and less than stellar results: seven starts, 126-of-251 passing with seven touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

But according to Rocky Mountain News staff writer Lee Rasizer,
