Bulger may have made himself a half-million dollars at the Pro Bowl.
Thats because the Rams made a $1.824 million qualifying offer to him Friday as a restricted free agent. At that level, the Rams would receive first- and third-round draft picks as compensation if another club signed Bulger to an offer sheet and the Rams chose not to match.
The Rams had considered tendering Bulger at $1.368 million, a level that would require only a first-round draft pick as compensation. But there was some concern in the Rams organization that Bulgers MVP performance in the Pro Bowl, where he threw four touchdown passes, might make him more desirable to other teams when the free-agency period begins Wednesday.
So they opted for the higher tender level. ...
By the way. ... In a column published Monday, Sports Illustrated senior writer Peter King offered readers the following tidbit: "I think, regardless what you hear out of the Rams in the coming days and weeks, they will trade Kurt Warner. The partys over for the Warners in Ramsville. ..."
And finally, in Arizona. ... New head coach Dennis Green has backed away some from his proclamation that he would not use the No. 3 pick on a quarterback. According to SportsLine.com insider Pete Prisco, team president Michael Bidwill and some of the staff were surprised when Green made the statement in part because they have not ruled out taking a QB.
As Prisco put it: "After taking receivers in the first two rounds last year -- Bryant Johnson and Anquan Boldin -- how could the Cards possibly justify using the third pick to take a Larry Fitzgerald or Mike Williams?
"They cant, and they shouldnt. Green can talk all he wants about Josh McCown and his abilities and about how he won with a bunch of different quarterbacks with the Vikings, but this team needs a quarterback in the worst way."
