was not going to cut Garner before the March 2 deadline for salary cap compliance.
"It was clear to us they planned on keeping him (for a while)," Levy said. "That, coupled with the fact that Charlie was uncomfortable going into the rest of the offseason without an extension, led to the decision to void."
Instead of being at the Raiders mercy and waiting to be waived while other opportunities dried up, Garner will be open to the highest bidder as of March 3.
And Levy didnt rule out talking to the Raiders again at some point in the process.
"Were not ruling anything out at this point," Levy said.
But as McDonald noted: "At 5-foot-10, 190 pounds, Garner does not fit the mold of the 250-plus carry workhorse back that has typified the offenses of new Raiders coach Norv Turner."
And following up on another running back-related item. ... According to the Associated Press, Clinton Portis has no problems taking his two 1,500-yard rushing seasons to the East Coast.
Portis indicated Friday he would welcome a trade to the Washington Redskins, a deal that by all accounts is all but done.
In fact, the Washington Times reported early Sunday that Redskins cornerback Champ Bailey and his agent, Jack Reale, have found no snags with the written proposal that would prevent the Pro Bowl player from signing with the Broncos. Thus, Bailey is expected to sign the contract today, the last step before Denver ships Portis to Washington.
For his part, Portis said he hasnt spoken with the Redskins but believes they would be willing to give him the new contract he wants.
"Im not concerned about it," Portis said while attending a charity event in South Florida. "I dont think the Redskins are going to bring me in just to keep me in the same situation."
Portis also likes Redskins owner Daniel Snyders willingness to spend money in an effort to win, including the teams recent acquisition of quarterback Mark Brunell.
