And even while their situation at wideout -- Tai Streets also becomes an unrestricted free agent next week -- and at quarterback remain uncertain, the Niners have made it clear who their featured running back will be this year.
As initially reported by SportsLine.com senior writer Jay Glazer, the team signed running back Kevan Barlow to a five-year extension that includes $8 million to sign. The contract is laced with guaranteed money and bonuses, but one source told Glazer it could reach about $20 million over the course of the next five years.
In just four starts this past year, Barlow proved himself worth of a featured role by rushing for 1,024 yards and an impressive 5.1 yard average. He also pulled in 35 passes for 307 yards in 2003, his third season in the NFL.
His re-signing will likely also spell the end for Garrison Hearst as the teams primary back. Hearst may decide to return at a lesser salary or take his services elsewhere.
And according to AP sports writer Greg Beacham, team officials also hope to restructure the contract of Jeff Garcia, entering the fourth season of a six-year contract. General manager Terry Donahue acknowledges the process has been difficult, but he still expects the veteran quarterback to return.
"Certainly, Jeff has the right to be concerned about his own career, short-term and long-term," Donahue said. "Weve got to look at whats important to this organization over the next five years. Its very important that we choose cap health over cap hell. We cant make short-term decisions."
But Donahue said the 49ers havent received any offers for Garcia, and they havent allowed the three-time Pro Bowl quarterback to talk to other teams about a possible trade. ...
According to AP sports writer Tom Withers, Cleveland running back William Green began serving a three-day jail sentence Monday after reaching a plea agreement on drunken driving charges.
