Illustrated insider Peter King advised readers on Monday, "the Colts have no one to blame but themselves for the pickle in which theyre now in. Allowing the leagues premier player to even reach the precipice of free agency, to get within sniffing distance of potential freedom, is a catastrophic blunder.
"Other franchises revisit contracts all the time in the NFL, rework deals years before high-profile performers are sniffing free agency, and the Colts should have done the same."

ESPN.com senior writer Len Pasquarelli noted on Sunday that one the more preposterous rumors connected to the Manning negotiations is that the Colts would have to release tailback Edgerrin James for salary cap reasons.
No one seems to be buying into that one.
But after talking to a handful of coaches from around the league, Pasquarelli suggested: "There is a feeling that James still isnt, even two years after his knee surgery, the player he was before the operation. And some people feel that, with Manning and wide receiver Marvin Harrison still around, the Colts might still be able to win while playing a lesser-talented tailback, like Dominic Rhodes. ..."
Still sounds mighty unlikely to me, but as Pasquarelli correctly noted, more than a few league insiders still believe Indianapolis will always be a Super Bowl threat with Manning, even if his supporting cast is somewhat limited. ...
