According to Phillips, Condon is regarded as fair and reasonable, but he is a passionate advocate.
In 2001, he held running back LaDainian Tomlinson out for most of the first month of the San Diego Chargers training camp.
A year later, Condon played hard ball with Kansas City. Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez was in a position similar to Mannings. Gonzalez had established himself as one of the leagues top players. It was time for his second contract.
Kansas City offered to make Gonzalez the games richest tight end. Condon declined. He argued that Gonzalez caught passes with the frequency and facility of a wide receiver. He insisted he be paid like one.
Negotiations dragged. The Chiefs were forced to designate Gonzalez their "franchise player," a move that kept him off the free-agent market but adversely affected their salary cap situation.
Team president Carl Peterson unloaded on Condon in the media. Condon responded. Their differences eventually were resolved in a seven-year, $31.5 million contract.
"A lot of people thought there was anger and rancor involved," Peterson said. "There wasnt. It was business. You can get a deal done with him; he understands the importance of getting a fair deal for both management and the player. In my 15 years with the Chiefs, weve probably done a hundred contracts together. ..."

In an article published Feb. 4, Star News beat man Mike Chappell advised readers that Dallas Clark experienced no setbacks after suffering a broken leg on November 30 against the Patriots. In 10 games in 2003, he caught 29 passes for 340 yards and one touchdown.
Chappell went on to note: "Clark displayed reliable hands and the ability to pick up yards after the catch and was an excellent blocker. Coordinator Tom Moores two-tight end alignment should be as formidable as ever with Clark and Marcus Pollard. ..."
