Huard, all with cap numbers in excess of $5 million, are expected to be released and more could fall into that category if Mannings deal is not completed by early March.
Franchise tags must be designated by Feb. 24. If the two sides agreed to a deal by March 15, Mannings cap number likely would be lower, giving the team more flexibility to keep some veterans.
The problem is NFL rules require teams to meet the salary cap by March 3, the deadline Polian set last Friday.
Polian did not say what moves would be made, but the Colts have six key veterans who are either restricted or unrestricted free agents -- linebacker Marcus Washington, offensive linemen Ryan Diem and Rick DeMulling, cornerbacks Nick Harper and David Macklin and running back Dominic Rhodes. DeMulling and Washington started all 16 games, Harper and Diem made 13 starts and Macklin four.
Agents for some players have said they expect little to be accomplished before the Manning situation is resolved.
"They said most personnel matters have been put on hold until Peytons deal is worked out," said Ken Staninger, who represents DeMulling.
The Colts are already trying to create some extra room.
They recently restructured the contracts of starting offensive linemen Tarik Glenn and Jeff Saturday. Saturday, who was to make $1.8 million next year, and Glenn, who had a base salary of $2 million, accepted new signing bonuses to reduce their base salary.
The Colts also have contacted Rick Smith, the agent for wide receiver Brandon Stokley, about redoing his contract. Stokley has a $1.2 million salary next year.
"Well help out if they need it," Smith said.
Of course this all seems so unnecessary -- something Steve Young first suggested in his role as ESPN analyst prior to this months Pro Bowl. Its an opinion thats been expressed by others since.
