President Bill Polian said last Friday that the Colts roster faces "major revisions" if no deal is reached before next months deadline and Manning is designated the teams franchise player, a move Polian promised to make even though it would cost the team more than $18 million against next seasons salary cap.
If Indianapolis does franchise Manning, the NFLs co-MVP, Polian acknowledged it would force the Colts to release more players before the league deadline of March 3 to comply with a salary cap expected to be about $79 million.
"If we use it, cuts will have to be made," Polian said. "I wouldnt characterize it as a doomsday scenario, though."
Mannings contract expired at the end of the season.
Two days after the Colts lost 24-14 to New England in the AFC championship game, team owner Jim Irsay promised to make Manning, a four-time Pro Bowler, the leagues highest-paid player. Manning made a league-high $11.3 million last year and also had the NFLs highest salary cap number at a little more than $15 million.
Its unclear how close the two sides are to reaching an agreement.
Mannings agent, Tom Condon, has said he would not comment on negotiations and Polian declined to characterize how the talks have progressed.
"There is a time frame involved because there is an issue that involves making cuts," Polian said. "We have to reach an agreement or well have to go to Plan B to get under the cap."
