If the Bucs were able to trade for Brunell, which could cost as much as a second-round pick, it likely would be to replace starter Brad Johnson. "I only know what Gruden told me at the Senior Bowl and thats that Brad is his starting quarterback," said Phil Williams, Brad Johnsons agent.
But of course, Gruden has said a number of things in the last month, not all of which necessarily jibe.
According to both ESPN.com insider Len Pasquarelli, Gruden, who first ripped the sources who leaked word of the potentially unsettled situation at quarterback and then hinted the rumors might have initiated with former Bucs general manager Rich McKay, knew full well that wasnt the case.
In fact, in an article published Feb. 4, Pro Football Weekly advised readers that Gruden himself was the man behind those rumors.
PFW went on to suggest that Gruden hasnt exactly been quiet about possibly looking elsewhere for a starter -- including some talk about importing Rich Gannon from Oakland -- and there is a growing frustration with what are considered Grudens loose lips.
Last offseason, Gruden was overheard talking at the owners meetings about his friction with then-boss McKay -- something that Gruden denied -- and there are some in the organization who are reportedly wondering if they can trust Gruden with some of their personal feelings about the team. ...

Also according to Stroud, Allen has been busy trying to position the Bucs under the projected $79-million salary cap. Among the first cap casualties could be receiver Karl Williams, the eighth-year pro who dropped to fifth on the depth chart last season. Williams agent, Jack Bechta, said he has asked the Bucs for a quick decision on Williams. "I asked them to treat him like the classy veteran he has been," Bechta said. ...
