Zampese who really made it popular back in the day when [Kellen] Winslow and those guys were here."
Will Tomlinson be the Chargers primary receiver every week? Probably not. Hes too valuable as a pure running back, but if teams continue to stack defenses to stop him as a runner, the Chargers might be forced to put him out wide or in the slot more often.
"The more you get it in his hands out in space, the better," said Flutie. "A lot of his 5-yard runs, hes made four guys miss already to get the 5 yards. So if you can get the ball to him out in space, like in screens and in some things weve done with him in the past, look out."
"It was our intention to try to get him more touches, and one of the ways to do it was to throw it to him," said Schottenheimer. "Let me tell you something, there were not many yards to be had running the football (against the Lions). There were some opportunities around the edge, but throwing it to him gave us a better opportunity than handing it to him."
"I felt coming into the game that LT would catch the ball several times for significant yards because they are primarily a zone team," said Flutie. "And in zone, they can take away a lot of your downfield throws, and then you come to your check downs and LT has been very valuable in those situations.
"But the ironic thing was, his big plays came off man coverage, where we free-released him and he beat a guy one-on-one. Usually, what weve been doing in man coverage is to block things up and work the receivers one-on-one and make the throws to the wide outs. We started free-releasing him a little bit and got him out on the route and it was man-to-man on LT."
And as Neville pointed out, the Chargers will take those odds any day. ...
Also of interest. ...
Wide receiver David Boston did not practice for the second consecutive day due to a sore neck, but Schottenheimer "fully expects" him to return to the field on Friday.
The news wasnt as promising regarding Stephen Alexander (groin).
