Speaking of tying records, Tomlinson has 75 catches this season, four shy of his mark of 79 last year, which also equaled Harmons single-season team record set in 1992.
Tomlinsons 75 receptions lead NFL running backs and rank fourth in the AFC among all receivers. His 148 receiving yards against the Lions were the most by any running back in the NFL this season.
With 556 receiving yards and 1,260 rushing yards, Tomlinson leads the AFC with 1,816 combined yards from scrimmage entering Sundays game against Green Bay. He ranks third overall in the league in combined yards from scrimmage, just one place behind the running back hell be sharing the field with on Sunday: the Packers Ahman Green, who has 1,818 (1,463 rushing, 355 receiving). New Orleans running back Deuce McAllister leads the NFL in combined yards from scrimmage with 1,844 (1,462 rushing, 382 receiving).
With three games left, Tomlinson needs to average five catches per game to reach a lofty milestone; 90 catches and 1,000 rushing yards in the same season. Only one back in NFL history has done it; San Franciscos Roger Craig in 1985.
While outsiders might be surprised by Tomlinsons abilities as a receiver, his teammates and coaches are not. They see him make difficult catches look easy in practice almost every day. Its just that the rest of the world got to see him do it for the first time last Sunday.
"Ive seen it all before," said Doug Flutie, who connected with Tomlinson for two touchdowns last week. "His awareness on the field is exceptional. I hit him for the touchdown on the scramble, and it seems like hes alert for that. Ill only do that with LT. He has an awareness out on the field."
