Richardson noted that even though the Bucs have surrendered 18 sacks in the past seven games, head coach Jon Gruden doesnt believe the shotgun does much to ward off a good pass rush.
"The shotgun doesnt guarantee anything except that youre going to catch the ball deeper than where you would if you take it away from [under] center," Gruden said.
"You still have to let the receiver run 18- to 26-yard routes and get from Point A to Point B. And whether youre standing back there and catching the ball or dropping back into that position, protection problems are protection problems."
The Bucs didnt have many protection problems early in the season. They allowed just two sacks in their first five games. Injuries along the offensive line began to hit shortly thereafter, though, and thats when the sacks increased.
Instead of going to the shotgun, though, Gruden has been waiting for his linemens health and execution as pass protectors to improve. And even if the sacks continue to come, Gruden isnt like to alter his philosophy.
