Despite the specter of first-round draft pick Willis McGahee taking his starting job next season -- and perhaps cutting into his workload this season, despite a laundry list of injuries, despite getting more than 25 carries on only four occasions, Henry needs just 30 yards to hit the 1,000-yard mark for a second consecutive NFL season.
"It feels really good," Henry said. "Ive been going up the ranks slowly. These last few weeks weve really run the ball effectively. Its always good to reach the 1,000 mark in this league, so it feels really good to be close to it."
According to Roth, thats a remarkable feat, given the many hurdles placed before the well-respected and liked third-year pro.
After missing one and a half games with a painful rib injury following a preseason foot ailment, Henry had just 122 yards on 53 carries through the seasons first month. But over the past eight games, he has gained 848 yards on 188 carries, nearly doubling his per-carry average (2.3 to 4.5), while averaging 106 yards per game. Over the past six games, he has topped 100 yards four times and has 21 carries of 10 yards or more.
Making Henrys season the stuff of folklore is that since cracking his fibula just above his right ankle Nov. 16 in the first half against Houston, he hasnt missed a start, gaining 190 yards on 48 carries in the past two games and adding 27 more on five pass receptions.
In a game where everybody plays with pain, Henrys teammates are in awe of his effort, one of the Bills few bright spots this season.
"Hes amazing," said 12-year veteran fullback Sam Gash. "Hes truly a warrior. It really speaks for his heart and professionalism but also his talent. All guys play hurt, but Travis is producing, as well."
"He has got great physical and mental toughness," said general manager Tom Donahoe. "He brings a dimension to your team thats pretty special. Guys see what hes doing, and it inspires and motivates them."
