the playoffs were still a realistic possibility. But the Redskins will give a longer look to Betts as part of the clubs evaluation of their second-round pick.
"I think hes eager," said offensive coordinator Hue Jackson, also the running backs coach. "Hell be the first to say hes not where he wants to be just yet because he hasnt had the opportunity to practice at a high level like he did in training camp.
"This is an opportunity for all our players but especially for him because hes a guy who had so much promise heading into the season."
If Betts and Canidate dont produce in the waning games, a less-than-appealing crop of impending free agents means the team will likely pursue a featured back through the draft or via a trade.
Even when the Redskins acquired Canidate in an offseason trade, club officials viewed Betts as the ideal runner in Spurriers system. Betts was Washingtons tailback late in the season-opening 16-13 victory over the New York Jets, collecting clock-eating runs totaling 77 yards on 18 yards. But since then, Betts hasnt gained more than 39 yards in a game. Bettss low point occurred in the first half of Washingtons 24-7 loss in Buffalo when the tailback was injured after rushing for only 11 yards on eight carries.
"He has all the characteristics we look for but hes had some unfortunate injuries," Jackson said. "How do you evaluate a guy who slips during a drill and then turns around in a game and ends up fracturing his forearm."
Entering the season, Betts received the benefit of the doubt by being Washingtons second-round pick in the 2002 draft -- meaning despite the crowded backfield, Betts was the least likely to be released. But as the 56th player selected in last years draft, Betts has the pressure of higher expectations. "But I put a lot of pressure on myself," Betts said, "so pressure doesnt bother me. It helps me; it keeps me motivated."
Betts has been Washingtons least productive back, averaging only 3.3 yards on 76 carries. He has the shortest long gain among Washingtons top four tailbacks at 13 yards, which
