And Ladell Betts planned to win that competition by taking full advantage of his size, speed and sure hands.
But it didnt work out that way. ...
The first setback occurred in the teams second practice of training camp when Betts hyperextended his elbow trying to brace himself after a run. For the next three weeks, Betts was forced to watch as Trung Canidate won the top spot.
The Redskins started the regular season using both tailbacks, with Betts providing the power and Canidate the speed. After a fast start for both, Betts slowed before another freak accident, breaking his left forearm after it was hit by an opponents helmet during an Oct. 19 loss against the Buffalo Bills.
Betts has returned to the lineup, but hes yet to see the kind of extended playing time necessary to make a mark.
"Its been frustrating, but at the same time everything happens for a reason," said Betts, who had only two carries (for eight yards) against the Saints last week in his first game in over a month. "My spirits dont stay down. I just keep preparing myself, and hopefully Ill be able to do some things."
Washington is all but mathematically eliminated from the postseason as the club visits the Giants tomorrow. Both teams are playing for pride while winding down the season. But the games remain particularly significant for players such as Betts whose status for next season will be partly determined by the final games.
