The front office and the coaching staff eventually decided to let their inexperienced wideouts go it on their own.
The decision seems to have backfired.
Rookie Anquan Boldins spectacular year has overshadowed the receivers troubles. Bryan Gilmore starts but has had little impact. Bryant Johnson has had the struggles of a typical rookie receiver, Boldin notwithstanding. The other guys who were supposed to be in the mix arent -- Kevin Kasper is buried as a weekly inactive, Jason McAddley was sent to injured reserve, Larry Foster was cut. Nathan Poole is the fourth receiver, re-signed after being cut in training camp.
The passing game has been up-and-down at best. Johnson has just 25 catches, five in the last five games. Gilmore has just 14 catches.
Might a veteran have made a difference?
"We have had our moments, but we are a young receiving corps," Boldin said. "It could have been a different story."
Offensive coordinator Jerry Sullivan agreed, but only up to a point.
"I think if you get a quality guy, you always want him on the team," Sullivan said. "But if its just another guy and the only reason he is out there is because he is a veteran. ... You need to create your own veterans. By the end of this year, we will have done that."
The Cardinals did try to re-sign MarTay Jenkins earlier this season, but Jenkins failed his physical. The only other serious possibility was Marcus Robinson in the offseason, but
