"Obviously, I want to play. Id love to," Couch said. "But like Ive said all year, its Kellys job and coachs decision. If they want me to play, Ill definitely be ready and try to get the job done."

He didnt look ready in Seattle. After spending most of the first half bundled up in the Seattle chill at the far end of the Cleveland bench, Couch admitted surprise that Davis called on him and yanked Holcomb for the first time for performance.

He squandered great field position on his first series and gave way to a punt after three plays. On his second series, he was creamed by two Seattle defenders after getting the ball away to Darnell Sanders on second down.

And as Akron Beacon Journal staff writer Marla Ridenour reminded readers this morning, CBS analyst Solomon Wilcots took note of Couchs body language coming off the field after his first series and said it didnt appear Couch wanted to be in the game.

"I dont think its hard for me to have my heart in it," Couch said when asked about Wilcots comment. "Its tough when youve been standing there for a couple quarters and youre called upon. Kelly has done it many times and played well. I kind of look at him to see how he does that."

But Couch admits the adjustment to a backup role has not been as easy as it was for career backup Holcomb.

"Its tough to come in when youve been standing there for a couple quarters," he said. "But its part of being a backup. Kellys done it many times when Ive gotten injured and hes come in and played well. Ive kind of looked at him to see how he does that kind of stuff. Its definitely hard when you havent done it before."

Even though Couch was humiliated by his benching by Davis, he has spared the coach from a public diatribe that some may think is warranted. While being banished to the far reaches of the bench, Couch has seen Kevin Johnson, his go-to receiver since they were rookies, be fired and the offense progressively
