a starting role and Antowain Smith was inactive for the first time in his Patriots career against the Colts. Faulk has proven to be a playmaker, but hes also been an occasional fumbler. And hes certainly not someone you use to grind out yards and take time off the clock.
As Felger put it: "Those issues were on full display last week, when Belichick and offensive coordinator Charlie Weis opted to take the ball out of Faulks hands and go to the air with the clock winding down and the Pats preserving a slim lead."The conventional wisdom has Smith returning to the lineup this week and resuming his role as the Pats cold-weather back.
But if thats the case, Smith doesnt know it.
"I have no indications whatsoever," Smith said of his roster status. "I just have to go out there and be prepared, and if my number is called do the best job I can do."
Smith wasnt angry about being left out of the game plan last week, which isnt necessarily a good sign. He said he has no particular motivation to go out and show the coaches they made a mistake.
"Of course, you want to get out there and contribute. The main thing is when your number is called, just be ready," Smith said. "I dont use [the benching] as a motivation. Its a team sport. You have to do things for the team. We went into the (Indy) game with the [lineup] we thought we could win with, and thats what its all about."

In an item brought to my attention by Footballguys staffer Ken Maxwell, theyre expecting foul weather in New England this weekend and even though Adam Vinatieri has a solid track record working in adverse conditions, the release of punter Ken Walter means the veteran kicker will be working with a new holder.
According to Felger, backup quarterback Rohan Davey said the holding duties will fall to Damon Huard. Davey said he has never been a holder and that he hasnt been asked to do it this week.
