"If its single back, two tight ends and two wide receivers [a run-oriented formation], T.J.s taking most of that," said running backs coach Ollie Wilson. "If its a three-wide receiver package [and one tight end, a pass-oriented formation], then Justins taking most of that."
Dunn was a better pass protector and receiver than Duckett and Griffith. While Duckett has improved at both, Griffith is more advanced as a blocker, and more adept as a receiver, although he dropped a pass last Sunday at Houston.
As for the absence of a speed element in the backfield -- other than Vick, what about playing running back Woody Dantzler?
"We were talking about that [Wednesday] night," Wilson said. "If we had [Dantzler] in training camp. ... We would use him in a lot of those situations, in Mikes package, you know, the sprint outs and that kind of stuff. Right now, the plan is not to use him as much and kind of find out. ... How we want to use him."
Dantzler, who was claimed off waivers from Dallas on Sept. 1, worked some Thursday at wide receiver, where the Falcons were short-handed.
In an article published Monday, Pro Football Weekly suggested that Dunns absence could result in a more focused attack down the stretch run and could give Duckett and Griffith some confidence that they might otherwise not have had. ...
Also according to Winkeljohn, Brian Finneran returned to practice Thursday, but was limited by his hyperextended right knee. Head coach Dan Reeves said its still possible Finneran could start. If he doesnt, rookie Terrence Edwards might, although the Falcons may open in a two-back, two-tight end set with one wide receiver.
Finneran didnt make a prediction on his playing status. He also has a broken thumb. He played at Houston with a splint, which he said doesnt make it much more difficult to catch a ball, but does affect his ability to tuck it.
