In a position that usually warrants little attention, Vanderjagt thrives on it, especially now that hes made 32 straight field goals.
"If I can get through Tennessee, I feel I wont miss this year," he boldly predicted Wednesday.
Vanderjagt, the NFLs most accurate kicker (87.3 percent), has reason to be confident.
He enters the final four games as the NFLs only regular kicker without a miss, having made 28 field goals and 35 extra points. On Wednesday, he earned his second straight AFC special teams player of the month award.
Hes also on pace to break his own franchise scoring record (145 points), and with an AFC-high 119 points could eclipse Gary Andersons NFL scoring record for kickers (164). Only Paul Hornung, who had 176 points in 1960, scored more points in one season.
These days, though, most of the questions Vanderjagt answers are about "The Streak."
And unlike pitchers, goalies or even quarterbacks who try to dissuade such talk, Vanderjagt encourages it.
"Confidence is important and the good guys Ive been around have all had that," head coach Tony Dungy said. "They may not show it as outwardly as Mike, but none of them thought they were going to miss."
Officially, Vanderjagt hasnt missed a regular-season kick since Dec. 8, 2002 at Tennessee, where the Colts play again Sunday.
Because of the wind, field surface, chilly temperatures and possibility of changing conditions, Vanderjagt believes it will be his last real challenge this season. Indianapolis has two home games remaining before finishing
