How Do I Play Fantasy Football

"Traditional" fantasy football leagues involve a group of players - typically friends, relatives or co-workers - who all know each other and can discuss their successes and failures with each other every week.

But fantasy football is also a game that can easily be played online with a group of fellow football fans that you've never met. Leagues can be as large or small as you'd like. Generally, leagues for beginners have approximately 8-10 teams, but a league can be formed with just a handful of teams all the way up to a large group of 50 or more owners.

Regardless of how a league is formed, player selection is usually the most important part of the season. In draft based games, and in those cases where geography - and busy schedules - will allow, teams can be selected in person via a "draft", typically held at an owner's house, or some public venue capable of hosting a meeting.

Online leagues — or leagues where the owners are simply unable to get together in person - hold their drafts via the Internet. Over the past few years, technology has allowed the interfaces for online drafts to become much more user-friendly, meaning that beginners and experts alike can easily select an entire team in a short period of time.

Press sports writer R.B. Fallstrom, the wide receiver option pass dreamed up by Marshall Faulk last week was no novelty. Most every week, head coach Mike Martz said he gets a couple of play suggestions from his star running back.

"Its hard for me because Im trying to watch practice and focus, but he always has ideas and I use probably half of them because theyre always well-thought-out," Martz said. "Hes done his homework, he looks at it real hard, and he knows."

Faulk has long had a reputation as a thinking mans player. Martz leans on him for input, treating him like another coach. The two often chat during practice, and its not about the weather.

"I watch too much film, thats my problem," Faulk said. "I come up with all kinds of stupid stuff."

Faulk had his third straight 100-yard rushing game in last weeks 48-17 blowout over the Vikings, scoring three touchdowns to move past Hall of Famers Walter Payton and Jim Brown into fifth place on the career list.

Since relocating to St. Louis in 1995, the Rams are 29-0 when they have a 100-yard rusher. Twenty-two of those games have come from Faulk in the last five years, and he seems to have his burst back after missing five games earlier in the year with a broken left hand and injured right knee.

"I know a lot of people have written him off: hes too heavy, too slow, too old," Martz said. "Hes not done. Hes got a lot of mileage left, trust me when I tell you that."

Faulks other big contribution was Isaac Bruces 41-yard pass to Dane Looker to the 5 in the third quarter, which set up one of his touchdown runs on the next play. Faulk acted as triggerman, taking a handoff from Marc Bulger before giving the ball to Bruce. Looker was wide open, just as Faulk envisioned.

"You see things, and its just a credit to him as a coach when a player comes to him and says, Hey, take a look at this here," Faulk said. "We worked on it a couple of days and then we put it in and we
