of his own destiny?
Thats a question that has been played out in the mind of head coach Brian Billick as his team nears its first division title. According to Baltimore Sun staffer Jamison Hensley, there are two scenarios -- Cincinnati losing at home to Cleveland today or the Ravens jumping out to a sizable lead -- that could force Billick to decide whether to rest Lewis for the playoff run or give him a chance at the record.
"It could be a very difficult decision," Billick said. "It will be fraught with the perils of hindsight. Its one of those decisions like a play call. The decision in and of itself - when you make it and the reasons you make it - is very sound. But its the consequences youll be judged by.
"If we leave him in and he gets the record, its the right decision. If we leave him in to get it and he injures himself, then Im the village idiot again."
Billick said his reasoning ultimately will be based on where the game stands, how well Lewis has been running and what are the realistic chances of him breaking the record.
"This is my call," Billick said. "Thats not for Jamal to have to worry about, for this team to worry about. Theres only one person thats going to be held responsible either way. The record is important and I will honor the fact that this is. ... Possibly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Equally though, theres a bigger perspective in mind."
Whether Lewis sets the record or not, his journey from torn ACL to running away with the NFL rushing title puts him in a class by himself.
"I just love the talk of the record because of all the adversity Jamal has had to go through," said linebacker Ray Lewis, who rooms with Jamal every training camp. "Just to see where hes at now and to be the back Ive been telling people he was, its special."','12/28/2003','6:35:00 AM','Sunday',978 6544,23,17,'Torn Triceps Could Sideline Westbrook For Playoffs...','A quick heads up for those of you who carry the Fantasy festivities on through the playoffs....
