"I understand why Marty pulled me midseason, in the Chicago game," Brees said.
"I understand, and I probably deserved it. But then I was out for five weeks. I believe that was an awful long time. Obviously, I wanted to get back out there as soon as possible.
"After a week or two, I felt like I had learned my lesson and was beginning to see some things. But they say patience is a virtue, and thats kind of part of being a quarterback, being patient, waiting on your opportunity, and when your opportunity comes, taking advantage of it. So I think its all a lesson. I think theres a lesson in just about everything, and you try to draw a positive. I feel like Ive done that."

And thats why the Chargers could bring in a veteran next year to challenge Brees, who turns 25 next month, for the top spot; Flutie would likely be invited back as well. Among possible acquisitions are Jacksonvilles Mark Brunell, St. Louis Kurt Warner, Clevelands Tim Couch, Miamis Jay Fiedler and San Franciscos Jeff Garcia.
Of course, the team could look to the draft for an answer. Unfortunately, previous attempts to land a franchise quarterback on draft day have come up short. Ryan Leaf, Moses Moreno, and to a degree, Brees, come to mind among recent Chargers prospects.
A loss today would clinch the drafts No. 1 pick for the 3-12 Chargers. If staying put, they could pick from Mississippis Eli Manning, Miami of Ohios Ben Roethlisberger or North Carolina States Philip Rivers.
However, Brees is by no means ready to throw in the towel. Although hes completed but 57.9 percent of his passes for 2,011 yards, Brees feels the teams quarterback of the future is
