How Do I Play Fantasy Football

"Traditional" fantasy football leagues involve a group of players - typically friends, relatives or co-workers - who all know each other and can discuss their successes and failures with each other every week.

But fantasy football is also a game that can easily be played online with a group of fellow football fans that you've never met. Leagues can be as large or small as you'd like. Generally, leagues for beginners have approximately 8-10 teams, but a league can be formed with just a handful of teams all the way up to a large group of 50 or more owners.

Regardless of how a league is formed, player selection is usually the most important part of the season. In draft based games, and in those cases where geography - and busy schedules - will allow, teams can be selected in person via a "draft", typically held at an owner's house, or some public venue capable of hosting a meeting.

Online leagues — or leagues where the owners are simply unable to get together in person - hold their drafts via the Internet. in an offense thats taking on more of the personality of head coach Dennis Erickson, who likes to go with multiple receivers and downfield passes. On his past three deep passes, Garcia hit two for touchdowns, and the third was catchable, but Terrell Owens couldnt make the grab.

Now Garcia is being used as an example to other players. When running back Kevan Barlow fumbled twice in a heartrending loss in Cincinnati, offensive coordinator Greg Knapp told Barlow, "Look what happened to Jeff Garcia in Baltimore and look how he responded."

According to Lynch, one of Garcias best qualities is his intensity, not only on the field but in his preparation. But when things go wrong, Garcia can grind himself down by taking the responsibility of the entire team upon his shoulders.

Since the 49ers were eliminated from the playoff hunt, Garcia has loosened up. Nevertheless, the pressure hasnt abated.

The media questioned his fitness to play and pondered whether the 33-year- olds career was ebbing. Garcia needed to prove to himself and to his teammates that he still was an effective quarterback.

"Its motivation for this team to finish on a high level of play on the football field," Garcia said this week. "If we can be a spoiler, thats even more positive for us to look at. But really, its just us wanting to go out as a team and give something to our fans to cheer about, and hopefully have something to really build on going into next season."

Next season likely will see the promotion of Brandon Lloyd into the starting lineup -- current starters Owens and Tai Streets are in the final year of their contracts. Lloyd will rotate in today with Streets and Cedrick Wilson.

The rookie receiver has a tendency to make spectacular plays and could be the next great target for Garcia.

"He doesnt act like a rookie," Garcia said. "He walks around the locker room with quite a swagger to him."
