The answer: Maybe the latter.
Jeff Garcia went through that very experience at the end of November when he threw four interceptions and compiled a woeful 18.8 quarterback rating in a 44-6 blowout loss to the Ravens in Baltimore. The next day, Garcia watched the horror on videotape.
The Baltimore loss all but eliminated the 49ers from the playoffs. After viewing the tape with his fellow signal-callers, Garcia was asked by quarterbacks coach Ted Tollner to stay in the room for a minute.
The thoughtful Tollner, whos in his 31st year of coaching in the NFL and college, sat down with his beleaguered quarterback.
"I know for me, it was kind of a low point, and I think it was for him, too," Tollner said. "We were still (technically) in the playoffs (hunt) but that was pretty unrealistic. I asked Jeff, How are we going to salvage something out of this season? I think we needed to re-adjust our goals and get something positive out of the season."
Garcia said he views the 63-year-old Tollner as a fine coach and a father figure. Tollner said he wanted Garcia to be the best quarterback in the month of December.
Going into todays season finale at home against the Seahawks, Garcias 123.65 rating this month is the leagues best. Over the past three games, Garcia has tossed eight touchdown passes without an interception.
