had a two-day holdout at the beginning of training camp, Tice called him out several times during that short span, saying he was worried Smith wasnt taking his new role seriously.
Smith responded by showing up in camp on the morning of the first practice to show his seriousness about his new job even though his agent and the team were still ironing out their differences.
Then, early in the season, Tice didnt give Smith any playing time, saying he wasnt ready to block in the NFL.
"On this team, running backs block, and Onterrio isnt ready yet," Tice said in September.
Smith responded by studying blocking schemes and working diligently in practice. He never complained about his situation. When given the chance to take over the kick-return duties in November, Smith excelled and found a spot before getting his chance to get major tailback carries this month because of Michael Bennetts ankle injury.
"Onterrio just gets it," Dalton said. "When he wasnt getting the ball he wasnt complaining that hes the man and should be carrying the ball like some guys do. But when Onterrio does get the ball, he acts like the man. That shows maturity....
"Hes the player everybody thought hed be, but hes a much better person than some people may have thought."

Smith continues to play well despite two sore hamstrings and an aching shoulder.
His 48 carries the past two weeks is the heaviest two-week workload of any Vikings running back this season. Moe Williams opened the season with 43 carries in the first two games.
