How Do I Play Fantasy Football

"Traditional" fantasy football leagues involve a group of players - typically friends, relatives or co-workers - who all know each other and can discuss their successes and failures with each other every week.

But fantasy football is also a game that can easily be played online with a group of fellow football fans that you've never met. Leagues can be as large or small as you'd like. Generally, leagues for beginners have approximately 8-10 teams, but a league can be formed with just a handful of teams all the way up to a large group of 50 or more owners.

Regardless of how a league is formed, player selection is usually the most important part of the season. In draft based games, and in those cases where geography - and busy schedules - will allow, teams can be selected in person via a "draft", typically held at an owner's house, or some public venue capable of hosting a meeting.

Online leagues — or leagues where the owners are simply unable to get together in person - hold their drafts via the Internet. Over the past few years, technology has allowed the interfaces for online drafts to become much more user-friendly, meaning that beginners and experts alike can easily select an entire team in a short period of time.

With one game remaining in his rookie season, it appears Smith and the Vikings have benefited from the union. In the past two games, Smith has rushed for 147 yards (a team rookie record) and 146 yards and has worked his way into the rotation. With authority. Off the field, Smith has been a model citizen.

"I dont get it," center Matt Birk said. "Really, hes kind of quiet. He doesnt cause any problems around here."

As he reflects on his first NFL season, Smith is most proud of compliments from his coaches and teammates about his character. Very confident, he said he knew he would have success running the ball as a rookie, but he was most concerned with making a good impression on his teammates as a person and to shake a reputation he says is unwarranted.

"I think if you ask people who know me, theyll tell you Im good person," said Smith, who is always polite and friendly with reporters. "I think what happened was I made some dumb mistakes as a youngster and they stuck with me and hurt my draft status. Its crazy how old mistakes keep on haunting you. But Im glad the Vikings took me and Im glad Im starting to prove to people that Im not a problem."

Smiths problems began was he was kicked out of the University of Tennessee in 1999 for smoking marijuana. A year later at Oregon, he was arrested for drunk driving. He has been open about taking about the incidents.

"Yes, they were stupid mistakes," Smith said. "But if youre going to think Im a bad guy for smoking marijuana four years ago, thats kind of hard. Ive matured. Ive done a lot of growing up."

Thats not to say Smith, who occasionally was late for team meetings early in the season, doesnt have a colorful side. He has given himself several nicknames and has been known to break into a dance on the field after an impressive run.

"Thats just me having fun," he said with a laugh. "I do have a personality."

Head coach Mike Tice readily admits he isnt always easy on Smith. When the youngster, who is tied for the team rookie record with five rushing touchdown,
