According to Canton Repository sports writer Steve Doerschuk, there are signs Jamel White could help the right team with the right line at the right time, full time.
There are also signs Cleveland is not that team.
Given the signs, it seems far more likely Lee Suggs, not White, could be the Browns feature back, if William Green doesnt make it back.
White has had one big rushing game in each of the last three seasons. He rushed for 131 yards at Green Bay on Dec. 23, 2001.
He rushed for 105 yards at Pittsburgh on Sept. 29, 2002.
And he rushed for 101 yards against St. Louis on Dec. 8 this year.
There is little evidence White can do this consistently, though. Aside from those three games, he has rushed for more than 50 yards just four times, and never more than 65.
Head coach Butch Davis seemed perplexed this week when asked why White has seemed distracted -- especially in light of the fact he got the new contract he wanted this summer.
White was eligible for restricted free agency in the 2003 offseason, but the Browns made it hard for any team to pry him loose by offering a $1.3 million tender. They subsequently signed him through the 2006 season.
Given Greens indefinite suspension and uncertain return from substance-abuse issues, the Browns are exploring a very important Plan B.
In it, they are identifying their next best option at feature back.
The candidates are White, James Jackson and Suggs.
Suggs has begun to impress many observers as the best-looking option. The Browns are being careful with that perception, though.
