6514,31,17,'Flemister Could Be Benched For Closer...','According to Washington Post staff writer Mark Maske, team officials are considering placing tight end Zeron Flemister and defensive tackle Darrell Russell on the inactive list for Saturday nights season finale against the Philadelphia Eagles because the players were late for yesterdays practice at Redskins Park, sources said.
Members of the clubs upper management were extremely frustrated about what they regarded as the teams lack of discipline and professionalism, sources said, and they are upset about what they consider a pattern of players being late to meetings and practices.
But that frustration apparently has not led owner Daniel Snyder to reconsider his support for head coach Steve Spurrier. Snyder has not wavered in backing Spurrier and said recently that he "absolutely" would retain Spurrier next season.
According to Maske, Thursdays practice was closed to media members, but observers said that Flemister, the clubs starting tight end, and Russell, a former Pro Bowl defensive tackle who has played little since signing with the Redskins in late October, were late. Neither the players nor Spurrier were available to comment.
Spurrier has said in recent weeks that he intends to take a tougher approach next season in dealing with his players, provided that he returns to the Redskins. He could try to model himself more closely after Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells, a noted disciplinarian who has little or no tolerance for even small infractions by his players. Spurrier is not known as a strict disciplinarian, and players say that he rarely has imposed fines for tardiness to meetings or practices.
Spurrier has said that he perhaps has given NFL players too much credit in expecting them to be motivated and professional without prodding by their coach. He has expressed frustration at times with his players inconsistent effort level and inattention to performing their assignments during
