receiver.
"Thats our goal going in, to establish a running game," Texans left tackle Chester Pitts said. "Whatever [Davis] needs, if we get that plus one yard and he makes his 1,000 yards, that will be a great goal for us to shoot for.
"We also want to protect long enough so Andre can catch a couple of passes and maybe he can get his 1,000 yards. Hes not too far off as well. It would be something we can stick our names to and get our name away from those darn 76 sacks from last year."
The Texans offensive linemen drew national ridicule last season after David Carr was sacked 76 times, the most of one quarterback in a single season. Davis wants the milestone for his offensive linemen as badly as he wants it for himself.
"That makes me feel good," Davis said of McKinneys guarantee. "Theyre looking out for me. They want to make sure I get to 1,000. Thats the talk. We just want to win first. If we do that, everything will take care of itself. I dont want to (guarantee it) because anything could happen. Ill just wait and see."
Patience clearly is one of Davis best qualities. He was never the featured running back at LSU and wasnt selected until the second day of the draft when the Texans picked him in the fourth round. Even then, the team only talked of using him as a return specialist and possibly a third-down back.
That happens," head coach Dom Capers said of Davis improbable rise. "Domanick was backing up at LSU, but when you saw him run when he had his chances, you saw the same things weve seen here. It happens every year. Im glad that we were fortunate enough that it happened for us. For me to stand here and say I knew he was going to be our starting running back and do the things hes done, I couldnt say that."
As for his rookie tandems run toward their goals, Capers said he doesnt even know how many yards either lacks and that the Texans would not tailor their game plan to boost statistics.
"Ive never gotten too hung up on that because your No. 1 goal is to do whatever it takes to win the football
