Return specialist Michael Bates, who had placed him on injured reserve Nov. 11 with a hand injury, was waived Tuesday. Bates, in his 11th NFL season, signed with the Jets on Sept. 10. He averaged 27.1 yards on 22 kickoff returns.

','12/25/2003','6:30:00 PM','Thursday',939 6505,12,17,'Ferguson, Walker Continue To Earn Favres Trust...','According to Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel beat man Tom Silverstein, the best way to determine the progress of a young wide receiver in the Green Bay Packers offense is to watch the ball.
If the receiver can be trusted, Brett Favre will find a way to get it to him. If the receiver is a once-in-awhile performer, Favre will find a way to get it to someone else.
These days, Favre is finding a way to get the ball on a regular basis to Robert Ferguson and Javon Walker, two young receivers who previously went significant periods of time without showing up on Favres radar screen.
In the last three games, they have been every bit as involved in the offense as Favres previous favorite target, Donald Driver, and the Packers are benefiting from it.
In victories over Chicago, San Diego and Oakland, Ferguson has 12 catches for 220 yards and two touchdowns, Walker has 10 catches for 200 yards and three touchdowns and Driver has 12 catches for 194 yards and one touchdown.
The young guys apparently have arrived.
"They havent had opportunities like this," receivers coach Ray Sherman said. "Ive said it all along - these guys are very talented and very athletic and theyre going to make plays when opportunities are there for them.
"Just playing every week is giving them confidence. It doesnt surprise me. Ive coached different groups of guys. This is the best group Ive been around as far as young guys going out and performing like they perform.
