Pete Mitchell, a nine-year NFL veteran who previously played with Jacksonville, the New York Giants and the Detroit Lions, signed a free-agent contract with the Colts Wednesday. He practiced with team in the afternoon.
"I think I bring a lot of things -- obviously a lot of experience," Mitchell said upon arrival.
Mitchell, in nine seasons, started 63 of 114 games, catching 279 passes for 2,885 yards and 15 touchdowns. He played four seasons with Jacksonville, two with the Giants, one with Detroit, then returned to Jacksonville, where he played last season.

Mitchell said he looked forward to playing in the Colts offense, which is ranked third in the NFL in total yardage. Peyton Manning leads the NFL with 4,047 yards passing.

"Pete gives us a couple of things," Dungy said. "He gives us another long snapper and he also gives us a tight end who has played in the league and can catch the football. Those are two areas where were a little thin at backup.
"If (long snapper) Justin Snow got hurt or if one of our tight ends got hurt, wed be scrambling."
