T.O. at all."
Ericksons only public condemnation of Owens stemmed from Owens sideline tirade toward offensive coordinator Greg Knapp during a Sept. 28 loss at Minnesota. The next day, Erickson said he warned Owens he wouldnt tolerate further outbursts, and Owens hasnt spoken to Bay Area sportswriters since then.
"Ever since the confrontation we all had, there hasnt been a problem," Erickson said. "Thats all I can concern myself with. Ive asked him to play hard, and hes played hard and done everything weve asked.
"That one incident wasnt fun, we all know that. But since that time, Ive enjoyed being around him. I enjoy him as a competitor and how he plays the game."
According to San Jose Mercury News staff writer Dennis Georgatos, by voiding his contract, Owens would force the club to decide whether to keep him by designating him a "franchise player" or let him become an unrestricted free agent.
The franchise tag would put Owens under contract for a salary reflecting the average of the NFLs five highest-paid receivers. The 49ers also would have the option of trading him. The team that wants to sign away a franchise player would have to give up two first-round draft picks.
Agent David Joseph told Georgatos he hasnt had any substantive contract talks with the 49ers, although he has been told by club officials that the team wants to keep Owens.
Joseph said Owens must tell the 49ers before March 1 whether he will exercise his option to void the contract.
"Its completely in his wheelhouse," Joseph said. "The probability is pretty high."
Joseph said he made it clear to the 49ers that he would be unhappy if the club used the franchise tag on his client.
"I told them, Dont do it. It would get ugly," Joseph said.
Should be an interesting offseason in San Francisco.
One last note here. ...
