but head coach Mike Shanahan was hopeful both men could play in the playoff game the following week.
Portis, the No. 2 rusher in the AFC with 1,591 yards, missed last weeks 31-17 win at Indianapolis. In his absence, Quentin Griffin and Mike Anderson ran for 136 and 56 yards, respectively.
By holding Portis and Neil out for another week, Shanahan said there was a better chance they could be close to 100 percent for the playoff game.
"Both guys arent going to play; I shared that with the team this morning," the coach explained after Wednesdays practice. "I think both guys would be capable of playing, but thered be that question mark -- how long could they last? I think with this week of practice, with this week of being back in football shape after being out a week, they should be in good shape for the following week."
And as DenverBroncos.com staffer Andrew Mason put it: "Given that the Broncos thrashed the Indianapolis Colts without Portis or Neil, benching them while they heal is not a sign of an advance surrender at Green Bay."
"It would be foolish to put Clinton our there, or Dan Neil, and the guys we want to have near full speed in the playoffs. Other than that, there arent a lot of guys you can take out of the game," said Jake Plummer. "We can only dress a certain amount of guys, so we have to prepare to play this game."
That includes Plummer himself.
"Im practicing the same as I would every week, taking the same reps going into the game," he said. "Im ready to play the whole game and get a win."
For Plummer and the rest of the Broncos who do play, dont expect them to take Sundays game halfheartedly.
"(My attitude is) to win the game, to continue doing what were doing and build momentum for the playoffs and really keep the focus we have right now as a group," receiver Rod Smith said. "Of course, we make mistakes, but for the most part, guys are really focusing on each other and doing things for the guy next to them."
